Macalester makes SMU victim No. 40 in a row WINONA, Minn. At least they're not alone. The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team became Macalester's latest MIAC casualty Tuesday evening, as the Scots scored twice in the first half and three times in the second en route to a 5-0 victory that extended their NCAA-record unbeaten streak to 40 straight conference games. The Scots, who have now beaten the Cardinals four times (outscoring them 14-0) during their streak which began with a 12-0 rout of Hamline on Oct. 30, 1996 and has seen Macalester outscore its conference foes 140-2 opened the scoring at the 33-minute mark on the first of two goals by Katie Stephens, then made it 2-0 10 minutes later when Amanda Cue converted a penalty kick. Stephens sandwiched her second goal between two goals by Ana Gierke in the second half as Macalester improved to 7-0-1 in the MIAC, while snapping the Cardinals' two-game winning streak and dropping SMU to 3-4-1 in the conference. The Cardinals take a break from conference play this weekend, traveling to UW-Stevens Point for a 1 p.m. contest. |
