Elder's OT goal lifts SMU to 2nd straight win

WINONA, Minn. — Erin Elder (Bloomington, Minn.) scored the game's only goal 10 minutes into the first overtime as the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team notched its second straight victory, a 1-0 nonconference win over Carroll College Saturday afternoon.

"This was definitely not one of our better games," admitted SMU coach Dan Blank, whose team outshot the Pioneers 17-8, but still needed over 99 minutes to score. "We came out flat from the beginning and never really got into a flow. We had a lot of good scoring chances, but we couldn't put it away.

"It was good to see Erin get that goal - she had some good opportunities (during regulation) and it was nice that she was finally able to put one in the back of the net."

Katie Curran (Apple Valley, Minn.) had the Cardinals' best scoring opportunity in regulation, but her shot at the open net with 13:30 left sailed just wide.

Elder finally put the game away with 5:54 remaining in the first overtime, taking a feed from Andrea Kemp (Hastings, Minn.) and beating Pioneer goalie Corinne Balisteri with a shot to the upper left corner. SMU goalie Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) stopped all eight Carroll shots for her fifth shutout of the season.

The Cardinals improve to 7-6-1 overall and return to MIAC play Tuesday, when they travel to St. Paul, Minn., to take on league-leading Macalester.
