Balla, Elder score as Cardinals slip past Carleton

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team rebounded from a disappointing, 2-1 overtime loss to Concordia in impressive fashion Wednesday, getting second-half goals from Erin Elder (Bloomington, Minn.) and Bernadette Balla (Barrington, Ill.) en route to a 2-1 victory over Carleton in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game at Ochrymowycz Field.

After a scoreless first half, Elder got the Cardinals on the board, scoring her team-leading sixth goal at the 54:56 mark. Less than 13 minutes later, Balla made it 2-0, taking a feed from Shannon Cherry (Rosemount, Minn.) and beating Carleton goalie Cara Jones.

The Knights (3-4-0, 7-5-0) cut the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Kate Kingery at the 79:59 mark, but that was as close as they would get as SMU evened its MIAC record to 3-3-0.

Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) picked up the win in goal, stopping 12 shots.
