Dembiec to add women's head coach to his duties

Chris
Dembiec

Named women's
head coach
WINONA, Minn. — Chris Dembiec's workload just got a bit heavier.

In fact, as of Wednesday, Dembiec's workload just doubled.

Dembiec, entering his second season as the SMU men's soccer coach, was named head coach of the Cardinal women's soccer team as well, replacing Tony Guinn, who stepped down on Tuesday to accept the head soccer position at Western Illinois State University.

"I was thrilled for Coach Guinn, who was given the opportunity to realize his dream of being a Division 1 head coach," said Dembiec. "But as an amazing friend and colleague, he will be missed by all whose lives he has affected.

"With Coach Guinn's departure, my thoughts went to those players who were now coming into the season without a head coach," Dembiec added. " I really admire the women's program and feel as though I can help ease the hardship of a transition, yet provide quality leadership to reach our goals."

Dembiec guided SMU to a 4-12-0 record during his first year at SMU. Prior to his arrival at SMU, Dembiec spent 10 seasons as the head boys and girls soccer coach at The Prairie School in Racine, Wis., where he compiled a combined record of 298-121-24. Dembiec guided his boys team to back-to-back state titles in 2004 and 2005 and as finished second in the state championships four times (twice
with the boys and twice with the girls). A two-time Wisconsin State Coach of the Year, Dembiec earned NSCAA Midwest Region Coach of the Year honors in 2004.

"I am very excited to have Coach Dembiec leading both of our soccer teams," said SMU athletic director Nikki Fennern, noting that one coach for both men's and women's programs is not an uncommon practice among NCAA Division III institutions. "I expect great things out of both programs this year and in the future under his outstanding coaching ability, leadership, and organization. Coach Dembiec's energy, commitment, and intensity make him the perfect person to lead both programs."

"There is no replacing Coach Guinn," Dembiec said. "But I see my job as realizing his goals for this team to the best of my ability. I am so excited to coach such fine players. I know together we can make this a great experience."
