Johnson is at her best as SMU senior helps Cardinals earn 0-0 tie After witnessing what the Cardinals' senior did against his team Tuesday afternoon, St. Olaf coach Jeremy Driver would probably agree. Johnson, who has been the Cardinals' backbone all season, picked the perfect time to be just that perfect as she stopped a season- and career-high 19 shots in helping SMU to a 0-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tie vs. the Oles at Ochrymowycz Field. "I think she's one of the best in the country I've said that all along," said Guinn of his goalkeeper, who posted her second shutout of the season and the eighth of her career. "She's a special person. I have never coached a goalkeeper, male or female, that's better than Jennifer and I've been doing this for 17 years. "She is so composed out there and she really needed to be today," continued Guinn. "(St. Olaf) had a ton of great scoring chances and (Johnson) was there to shut the door every time. "This was by far her best game of the year." The Oles swarmed the Cardinal net from start to finish, peppering Johnson with nine shots in the first half, seven more in the second, and three during the two overtimes combined. Yet, no matter what the Oles threw at her including two point-blank shots just after intermission, not to mention a pair of second-half breakaways Johnson was up to the challenge. Unfortunately, the one thing Johnson couldn't do for her team was score a goal, as the Cardinals settled for their second straight tie and their third double-overtime deadlock in their last five games (1-1-3). "A point's a point," said Guinn, whose team has now gone into overtime in four of their last five games. "It would have been nice to get the win, but every point you can get in this conference is valuable." |
