SMU is now 3-0-0 for the second straight season and has outscored its opponents 15-1. … Freshman Melisa Entinger (Mound, Minn.) netted her first collegiate hat trick — and her first three collegiate goals — to account for three of SMU's five goals vs. Northland last Friday. … Bethany Kaufmann (Green Bay, Wis.) scored a goal in both SMU games last week and has now scored at least one goal in all three of SMU's games. … Jamison McClure (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and Keirra Metcalfe (Pickering, Ontario) also netted their first collegiate goals last week, giving SMU nine different goal-scorers in their three games this season. … UW-Superior's first-half goal Sunday snapped SMU's shutout streak at 190 minutes. … All four of the Cardinals' goals vs. UW-Superior Sunday came in the first half.

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered last Sunday's nonconference game against UW-Superior with a pair of streaks intact.

They left with just one.

The important one.

After opening the season with back-to-back shutouts, the Cardinals surrendered their first goal of the season against the Yellowjackets.

That goal may have snapped SMU's shutout streak, but it did little to slow the Cardinals' winning streak, as they erupted for four first-half goals en route to a 4-1 victory.

Their third straight victory.

"We played very well, especially considering the windy conditions we had to play in," said SMU coach Tony Guinn, whose team has now won three straight to open the season for the second straight year. "I thought we did a very good job of controlling the middle. Kelli Krmpotich (Rochester, Minn.) (the Cardinals' starting sweeper), and Abbey D'Acquisto (Racine, Wis.) and Emily Berg (Owatonna, Minn.) (SMU's center midfielders) played very well.

"When you get performances like that up the middle, it makes it very tough for our opponents to score."

Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.) gave SMU an early 1-0 lead Sunday, before UW-Superior knotted the game at 1-1. From that point on, it was all SMU, as the Cardinals' Jamison McClure (White Bear Lake, Minn.), Keirra Metcalfe (Pickering, Ontario) and Bethany Kaufmann (Green Bay, Wis.) netted three unanswered goals to preserve the Cardinals' perfect record.

"It's good to see so many people scoring goals for us," said Guinn, who has seen nine different Cardinals account for SMU's 15 goals during their season-opening three-game winning streak. "Last year, we were relying way too much on one or two people to carry the brunt of our offensive load. This year, we are much more balanced — we've got a lot of people who can put the ball in the back of the net."
