Cardinals' defense can't slow high-flying Cobbers in 2-0 setback

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia with the conference's No. 1 defense.

The Cobbers, meanwhile, boasted the league's No. 1 offense.

Something had to give.

And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was SMU's defense.

The Cobbers scored single goals in each half — including the first just two minutes into the opening half — as Concordia handed SMU its second conference loss in less than a week, 2-0.

Concordia, which has now won the last seven meetings between the two schools — dating back to a 2-1 Cardinal win in 1998 — entered Saturday's game boasting 26 goals in its first six games.

And the Cobbers didn't miss a beat vs. the Cardinals, as Amy Ravenhorst beat Cardinal goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) in just the second minute of play.

Concordia made it 2-0 midway through the second half, on a goal by Morgan Bain, as the Cobbers handed SMU its most lopsided loss of the season.

The Cardinals (2-2-0 MIAC, 9-2-0 overall) — who have now played 10 of their first 11 games on the road — finally return home on Saturday, playing host to St. Thomas in a 1 p.m. game.
