WINONA, Minn. — The 2005 season was one to remember for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.

Just how good was 2005 for the Cardinals?

* The Cardinals put together an impressive 13-5-0 overall record — posting their most wins since 1994, when SMU went 16-3-1 and lost to UC-San Diego in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

* Ten of their 13 wins came by shutout — including seven 1-0 victories.

* Junior Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) broke the school's goals-against-average with her 0.42 2005 effort.

* SMU held its opponents to one goal or less in 16 of their 18 games.

And what makes this past season all the more impressive is the fact that, in the span of just two years, the Cardinals have climbed from the depths of a 3-14-1 season in 2003, to this season's 13-5-1 effort.

In his first season at the helm, coach Tony Guinn began the Cardinals' climb, as SMU posted a 7-10-1 overall record a year ago.

And while the Cardinals' transformation is far from complete, SMU's 2005 performance — an improvement of 5.5 wins — did rank the Cardinals 10th among the most improved teams in all of NCAA Division III.

Westminster (Mo.) was the nation's most-improved NCAA Division III school, going from a 3-14-1 season in 2004, to 15-7-3 this past season, an improvement of 9.5 wins.
