Cardinals extend winning streak to 7 in convincing fashion with 6-1 triumph over Wisconsin Lutheran WINONA, Minn. After three straight 1-0 victories and five one-goal wins in their first six games Tony Guinn was in dire need of a breather. And the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team gave their second-year coach just that Sunday afternoon against Wisconsin Lutheran. Amy Cory (Crystal Lake, Ill.) scored two goals and Kendra Maloney (Green Bay, Wis.) added a goal and three assists, as SMU ran its winning streak to seven straight with a 6-1 rout of the Warriors. "It was a good win it was nice to be able to sit back and relax and enjoy watching our team play," said Guinn, whose team improved to 7-0-0 for the first time since 1999. "It was a good day for us everyone played well. "Our first three goals were great goals, their goalie didn't have a chance on any of them," continued Guinn, whose Cardinals have already equalled their win total from a year ago, when SMU finished the season 7-10-1 overall. "This team has come out and really played well thus far this season. They've worked very hard, and they are being rewarded for their efforts." Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.) got the Cardinals on the board at the 4:30 mark of the opening half, and within the next two minutes, Cory who netted her first two goals of the season after leading the team in scoring a year ago with 14 goals and Maloney had scored to push the SMU advantage to 3-0. Abbey D'Acquisto (Racine, Wis.) the Cardinals' hero in Saturday's 1-0 win over Carleton when she converted a penalty kick with 17 minutes remaining in regulation and Ashley Rice (Green Bay, Wis.) also scored first-half goals for SMU. Wisconsin Lutheran finally got on the board with less than two minutes remaining in the first half, as Charie Witte beat SMU goalkeeper Lauren Mess (Lake Geneva, Wis.). The goal was the first given up by the Cardinals since SMU gave up a first-half goal against Marian in its second game of the season a span of more than 462 minutes. The Cardinals will go for their eighth straight win on Wednesday, when they travel to Northland for a nonconference game. "We're not about to look past (Northland)," said Guinn, whose team's other game this week is an MIAC showdown against defending MIAC champion Macalester which knocked off top-ranked Wheaton last week on Sunday. "We know we've got a big game (against Macalester) coming up, but we've got to take care of business first. |
