vs. Gustavus
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team entered last Saturday's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game against Concordia with the conference's No. 1 defense.

The Cobbers, meanwhile, boasted the league's No. 1 offense.

Something had to give.

And, unfortunately for the Cardinals, it was SMU's defense.

The Cobbers scored single goals in each half — including the first just two minutes into the opening half — as Concordia handed SMU its second conference loss in less than a week, 2-0.

Concordia, which has now won the last seven meetings between the two schools — dating back to a 2-1 Cardinal win in 1998 — entered Saturday's game boasting 26 goals in its first six games.

And the Cobbers didn't miss a beat vs. the Cardinals, as Amy Ravenhorst beat Cardinal goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) in just the second minute of play.

Concordia made it 2-0 midway through the second half, on a goal by Morgan Bain, as the Cobbers handed SMU its most lopsided loss of the season.

"It was a tough loss – we did not play up to the standards we have set for ourselves," said SMU coach Tony Guinn, whose team had opened the week with a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Gustavus on Wednesday. "It's been an emotional week with plenty of highs and lows. We played hard but lost a tough game (vs. Macalester last Sunday), bounced back with a huge win (over Gustavus), and then came out and really struggled (vs. Concordia).

"Concordia is a very good team — talented and well-coached," continued Guinn. "Hopefully we can bounce back from this loss in the same manner we did after losing to Macalester."

The Cardinals (2-2-0 MIAC, 9-2-0 overall) — who have now played 10 of their first 11 games on the road — finally return home on Saturday, playing host to St. Thomas in a 1 p.m. game.

"It will be nice to finally play at home again," said Guinn, whose Cardinals knocked off Carleton 1-0 in their only home game this season. "We're all excited to get to play in front of our home fans again."
