This and That:
The Cardinals' 12 wins equal the most since SMU went 12-5-1 in 1999. … Three of SMU's four losses — including Saturday's vs. St. Benedict — have been 1-0 decisions. … SMU, which closes out its conference schedule with home games against Bethel (0-7-1) and St. Catherine (1-6-2), must win both games — and have St. Thomas and Augsburg both must lose Wednesday (UST vs. St. Ben’s and Augsburg vs. Gustavus) and then tie when they face each other on Saturday — to have any chance at making its first post-season appearance since 1994.
With one win, the worst St. Thomas could do is finish in a tie with SMU, and the Tommies hold the tiebreaker thanks to their 1-0 2 OT win on Oct. 8. SMU holds the tiebreaker over Augsburg — having handed the Auggies their first loss of the season, 1-0, on Oct. 15 — but one Augsburg win or two ties would knock out the Cardinals. … The Cardinals have allowed more than one goal in just one game – a 2-0 loss at Concordia on Oct. 1. … SMU's loss to St. Ben's snapped its three-game winning streak. … The Cardinals' final two regular-season games are at home, where SMU is 3-1-0. … Kendra Maloney (Green Bay, Wis.) netted the game-winning goal in SMU's 1-0 win over Hamline last Wednesday. … Patti Clintsman's first-half goal snapped SMU goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson's (Racine, Wis.) shutout streak at 282:16. … Maloney leads the team in assists (6) and points (14), while Amy Cory (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Lisa Tlougan (Rochester, Minn.) share the team lead in goals with five. … Johnson has made 103 saves (.936 save percentage) and boasts a 0.46 goals-against-average.

Game-winning
goal vs. Hamline
WINONA, Minn. — With three games left in the regular season, the playoff picture appeared bright for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team.

Especially after their back-to-back wins over previously unbeaten Augsburg and Hamline over the past week.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, St. Benedict decided to cast a dark cloud over their playoff hopes last Saturday, getting a first-half goal from Patti Clintsman en route to a 1-0 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory.

"It was a tough game to lose," admitted SMU coach Tony Guinn, whose team dropped to 5-4-0 in the MIAC, and, more importantly remained at 10 points in the standings – two points behind St. Thomas and three points behind Augsburg for the fourth and final playoff spot with two games remaining. "We still have a shot, but this loss really hurts us.

"We've got to finish (the regular season) with two wins, and we're going to need some help."

SMU closes out its conference schedule with home games against Bethel (0-7-1) and St. Catherine (1-6-2). Two wins would give the Cardinals 14 points — and that's where the help needs to come in.

SMU needs St. Thomas and Augsburg to lose both of its remaining MIAC games if the Cardinals are to have a shot at making their first post-season appearance in more than 10 years.

With one win, the worst St. Thomas could do is finish in a tie with SMU, and the Tommies hold the tiebreaker thanks to their 1-0 double-overtime win on Oct. 8. SMU holds the tiebreaker over Augsburg — having handed the Auggies their first loss of the season, 1-0, on Oct. 15 — but one Augsburg win in its remaining two games would knock out the Cardinals.

"We knew how important this game was, and we also knew how tough it was going to be to beat (St. Benedict)," said Guinn, whose team had its three-game winning streak snapped with the loss. "St. Ben's is a very strong team that plays excellent defense — just like us.

"It was one of those games where one goal was going to win it. We had one breakdown, and they scored on it — that was the difference."

Clintman netted the game's lone goal 12 minutes into the opening half, beating SMU goalkeeper Jennifer Johnson (Racine, Wis.) — ending Johnson's shutout string at 282:16.

"It's disappointing, but that's soccer — one mistake, one missed play can be the difference between a win and a loss," said Guinn. "We've still got hope (to make the MIAC tournament), but we've definitely got our work cut out for us."
