Saint Mary's extends winning streak to two straight

WINONA, Minn. — Through their first six games, the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team had scored seven goals — including three off the foot of freshman Amy Cory (Crystal Lake, Ill.).

In fact, SMU has gotten a goal from their freshman forward in each of the three games in which the Cardinals scored.

Make that in each of the four games.

Cory erupted for three goals — netting her first collegiate hat trick — as SMU won its second straight game, beating Benedictine 3-1 in a nonconference match last Sunday afternoon.

Cory, who scored a pair of goals in SMU's 6-1 rout of Rockford on Friday, a game that snapped SMU's season-opening five-game winless streak (0-4-1), got the Cardinals on the board at the 34-minute mark, beating Benedictine goalie Kiera Vizza to tie the game at 1-1.

The SMU freshman added her second goal just before the half ended, taking a feed from Kelli Krmpotich (Minneapolis, Minn.) off a free kick and beating Vizza to give the Cardinals a 2-0 advantage at halftime.

The Cardinals made it 3-0 when Cory netted her sixth of the season, on an assist from Ashley Kirkman (Stillwater, Minn.) at the 55-minute mark.

"This was an unbelievably nice weekend for us," said SMU coach Tony Guinn. "We've been in so many games this season, but weren't able to get over the hump. (Against Rockford and Benedictine), we got over that hump."

And then some.

SMU's six goals against the Regents last Friday were the most in a single game since the Cardinals beat Hamline 6-1 on Oct. 30, 1999 and, as Guinn put it, "got the monkey off our backs."

"I had a monkey the size of King Kong on my shoulder and I punched him right in the nose," said Guinn of last Friday's win. "I have said all along that the key for us was to play quality soccer for 90 minutes. I don't care whether we win or lose, but I want us to play the game the way it should be played.

"This weekend, we played quality soccer — and we won twice to boot."

Which gives SMU a huge head of steam heading into Wednesday's MIAC game at Augsburg.

"It should be a great game," Guinn said of the showdown vs. the Auggies. "We're coming in feeling confident after two straight wins, and Augsburg is coming off a 4-0 win against Bethel, so they're feeling pretty confident, too. I'm really looking forward to it."
