Good news can't outweigh bad news in Cardinals' 4-1 loss to UW-River Falls

RIVER FALLS, Wis. — It was a good news, bad news type of day for the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team Saturday afternoon against UW-River Falls.

The good news — SMU broke out of a two-game scoreless slump when Diane Schirmers (Prior Lake, Minn.) scored 21 minutes into the second half.

The good news, part II — Cardinal freshman goalkeeper Nicole Bohn (Winona, Minn.) stopped a career-high 26 shots.

The bad news — UW-River Falls made good on four of those 26 shots, including three second-half goals en route to the 4-1 nonconference victory.

Sarah Carlson got UW-River Falls on the board midway through the first half as the Falcons held a 1-0 advantage at the half.

Carlson made it 2-0 at the 56-minute mark, but Schirmers' second goal of the season pulled SMU within one, 2-1, 10 minutes later. Amy Jensen took all the drama out of the Cardinals' potential comeback, scoring back-to-back goals eight minutes apart late in the game as UW-River Falls handed SMU its third straight loss.
