Five-minute burst all Pipers need to hand Cardinals 2-0 MIAC setback

WINONA, Minn. — It had been a long time since the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team dominated a game the way the Cardinals did Wednesday against Hamline.

For nearly 80 minutes, it was the Cardinals who had the upper hand — rather than the other way around.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, field domination doesn't mean a thing if you can't put the ball in the net. Despite holding nearly a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal (14-8), SMU failed to score a goal for the fourth straight game — and for the 15th time in its 17 games — as Hamline used a pair of first-half goals five minutes apart to beat the Cardinals 2-0.

"For the first time this season, or at least since our last win (1-0 vs. Benedictine on Sept. 15), we controlled play," said SMU coach Dan Blank, whose team fell to 0-10-0 in the MIAC and 1-16-0 overall) "We had an open net from six yards away — all we had to do was tap the ball in and we missed it.

"It's been that kind of season."
