Five-minute burst all Pipers need to hand Cardinals 2-0 MIAC setback
WINONA, Minn. It had been a long time since the Saint Mary's University women's soccer team dominated a game the way the Cardinals did Wednesday against Hamline.
For nearly 80 minutes, it was the Cardinals who had the upper hand rather than the other way around.
Unfortunately for the Cardinals, field domination doesn't mean a thing if you can't put the ball in the net. Despite holding nearly a 2-1 advantage in shots on goal (14-8), SMU failed to score a goal for the fourth straight game and for the 15th time in its 17 games as Hamline used a pair of first-half goals five minutes apart to beat the Cardinals 2-0.
"For the first time this season, or at least since our last win (1-0 vs. Benedictine on Sept. 15), we controlled play," said SMU coach Dan Blank, whose team fell to 0-10-0 in the MIAC and 1-16-0 overall) "We had an open net from six yards away all we had to do was tap the ball in and we missed it.
"It's been that kind of season."
