7-goal first half just tip of the iceberg as Elmhurst pounds SMU

ELMHURST, Ill. — Just when the Cardinals appeared to have turned the corner, things took a turn for the worse on Saturday.

After dropping a heartbreaking 2-0 decision to UW-Stout last Tuesday, the Cardinals seemed to have their game pointed in the right direction heading into Saturday's nonconference match at Elmhurst.

Unfortunately for the Cardinals, Elmhurst proved to be a very ungracious host, as the Bluejays scored seven first-half goals and added four more in the second half en route to an 11-0 victory — the most lopsided loss in SMU women's soccer history.

Elmhurst got on the board at the 8:27 mark when Monica Milton converted a penalty kick — and the Bluejays never looked back. By the time the first half ended, Jenni Knautz had scored the first of her four goals and Elmhurst was enjoying a 7-0 cushion. Knautz sandwiched her third and fourth goals between goals by Kelly Burke and Phoebe Wainwright in the second half as the Bluejays improved to 4-1 overall.

The Cardinals (0-4 overall), who managed just three shots on goal — all in the second half — are still searching for their first goal of the season they were shut out for the fourth straight time.
