WINONA, Minn. — Better late than never.

The Saint Mary's University women's soccer team scored the game-tying goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation, then netted the game-winner with less than two minutes remaining in the second overtime, as the Cardinals slipped past St. Catherine 4-3 in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference game Tuesday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.

The Cardinals, whose four-goal outburst against the Wildcats equalled their offensive output for their other nine games combined, scored first on a goal by Shannon Cherry (Rosemount, Minn.) just 1:18 into the first half. The Wildcats, still searching for their first-ever MIAC soccer victory (0-6-0) tied the score three minutes later as Mindy Daugherty netted the first of her two goals.

Daughtery's second tally, nine minutes into the second half, gave St. Catherine a 2-1 advantage and Jill Ament padded that cushion to 3-1 10 minutes later. But the Cardinals never let down, getting a goal by Kelli Mooney (Maple Grove, Minn.) at the 66:55 mark to cut the lead to 3-2, then tying the score on Katie Curran's (Apple Valley, Minn.) goal at the 88:15 mark.

After a scoreless 15-minute first overtime period, the Cardinals finally broke through when Katie Lentz (Cottage Grove, Minn.) completed a three-way passing play with Curran and Mooney with a shot that beat St. Catherine goalie Kristin Wros — and gave SMU its first conference win of the season.

Colleen O'Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) finished with 12 saves for SMU (1-3-1 MIAC, 2-6-2 overall), while Wros posted 14 saves in goal for the Wildcats.
