New day, same old result as SMU drops 4-1 decision to Foresters

WINONA, Minn. — When Saint Mary's University women's hockey coach Terry Mannor left the ice after the second period Saturday afternoon, one phrase repeated itself over and over in his head: Deja vu.

Giving up two goals in both the first and second periods — for the second straight day — will do that to a coach.

So will having his team's lone goal scored by the same person — Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.).

And, unfortunately, so will suffering through a second-straight 4-1 nonconference loss to the Foresters at the SMU Ice Arena.,

"New day, same old result," said Mannor, whose team trailed 2-1 after the first period (again), and were staring at a 4-1 hole when they took the ice for the third period (again). "I thought we played with more energy and with more heart —  from start to finish — than we did (Friday), but I didn't think we played very well as a team.

"There was a lot of people trying to do too much individually, and that hurt us."

Mannor was hoping his Cardinals would be able to pick up where they left off on Friday — when they held the Foresters to just one third-period shot. Instead, what he got was a repeat performance.

Literally.,

For the second straight night, Lake Forest jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the game's opening 10 minutes as Jen Clouthier and Laura Wilson beat SMU goalie Amanda Gage (Lino Lakes, Minn.). Mondo cut the gap to 2-1 with her team-leading eighth goal of the season — a shorthanded tally at 14:53 — but once again, that was all the offense the Cardinals would muster.

"We've got to find a way to generate a little more offense," said Mannor, whose team has now dropped five straight — and have managed just five goals in that stretch. "We aren't going to win too many games scoring one goal a game.

"I was glad to see us bounce back and play with more energy and more heart (Saturday)," Mannor added. "Hopefully that's a step in the right direction."
