The Tommies scored 38 seconds into the opening period and never looked back, scoring four unanswered goals in a 4-1 MIAC win over the Cardinals Friday at the St. Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, Minn.

The Cardinals jumped out to a 2-1 first-period lead, but then gave up eight unanswered goals in falling 8-3 in the first game of the teams' MIAC series a year ago. St. Thomas completed the sweep, scoring two goals in the third period of a 3-2 UST victory.

The Cardinals’ loss to St. Thomas Friday was just the second loss in SMU’s last seven games. … The Tommies have now won the last eight meetings between SMU and UST, dating back to a 3-2, 4-3 Cardinal regular-season sweep on Feb. 21-22, 2003. … Angie Kryzer (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) netted SMU’s lone goal vs. the Tommies Friday. … Amanda Gage (Lino Lakes, Minn.) kicked out 32 of the 36 shots she faced vs. UST. … The Cardinals gave up two second-period goals vs. UST and have now been outscored 26-10 in the game’s middle period. The Cardinals' 5-1 win vs. Bethel last Saturday locked up their seventh straight MIAC playoff appearance. … The Cardinals’ loss to UST was just their second in SMU’s last seven games. … Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) is the team’s leader in all three offenisve categories — goals (12), assists (11) and points (23). … Mondo is currently in fourth place in career goals with 47 and points with 91. The Tommies' 7-0 road victory on Feb. 10 at Concordia-Moorhead broke them out of a scoring slump in which UST had lost four of its previous five games by a margin of 22-2. They lost 6-0 at UW-Stevens Point on Jan. 28; lost 8-0 to Gustavus Feb. 2; beat Gustavus 1-0 Feb. 3; lost 4-1 at home Feb. 7 to UW-River Falls; and fell 4-0 in the series opener to Concordia. … After their 7-0 win vs. Concordia and a 7-1 triumph over Hamline last Friday, the Tommies’ offense returned to hibernation in a 2-0 loss to the Pipers last Saturday. … The Tommies have been shut out in four of their last five losses. … Six of UST’s 10 losses have come by two goals or less. … Jill Kobow and Jackie Carroll share the Tommies’ scoring lead with 23 points, while Carroll is the team-leader in goals (13) and Katie Carrico and Kobow boast a team-best 13 assists. … Kobow, Carroll and Carrico are three of nine UST players with 10 or more points. … In their first four seasons at Saint Thomas Ice Arena in Mendota Heights, the Tommie women are 36-9-2, although they have lost three of their last five home games. … Over the last five years, St. Thomas has compiled a 78-14-5 record in MIAC play, including nine one-goal losses. … The Tommies reached the conference playoff finals in each of the last four years with one title and three one-goal losses to Gustavus (two in overtime).
