Cardinal News and Notes:
Saturday's 2-2 tie vs. St. Catherine snapped the Cardinals' season-high five-game winning streak, but extended their unbeaten streak to six. … Three of SMU's six games during their current unbeaten stretch have gone into overtime — the Cardinals are 2-0-1 in those three. … Friday’s five-goal offensive output equalled the Cardinals' team high (SMU also scored five in a 5-1 season-opening win over UW-Eau Claire and in a 5-2 win over Hamline). … The Cardinals’ 44 shots on goal vs. CSC on Friday were the most in a regulation game this season and two shy of the season-high 46 shots they took against Augsburg in a 1-1 overtime tie on Dec. 2. … Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) netted her first hat trick of the season and second of her carer in Friday's 5-2 win over St. Catherine. … Laura Mueller (St. Paul, Minn.) and Jill Rhody (St. Paul, Minn.) each had two assists in Friday's win, while Amy Madden (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) netted both goals in Saturday's 2-2 tie. … Mondo — who led the team in goals (8) and points (14) a year ago — already has surpassed those numbers with her team-leading nine goals and 17 points. … Mueller and Rachel Harrison (Madison, Wis,) share the team assist lead (8) with Mondo. … The Cardinals have now played seven overtime games — one short of the school record eight set in 2002-2003 — going 3-1-3.
Cardinals can't hold two-goal third-period lead as
St. Catherine steals precious MIAC point in 2-2 tie

Friday vs. CSC
WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University women's hockey team made it look easy last Friday evening, getting a hat trick from Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) en route to a convincing 5-2 win over St. Catherine.

And the Cardinals made it look just as easy early on in Saturday's rematch at the SMU Ice Arena — getting a goal from Amy Madden (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) just 49 seconds into the opening period.

The rest of the game, however, was anything but easy, as St. Catherine rallied from a two-goal deficit — scoring back-to-back goals two minutes apart early in the third period — and escaped with a 2-2 tie.

And a crucial conference point.

The Cardinals entered Saturday's game trailing St. Olaf and Bethel — the Cardinals' opponents in the final two weeks of the season — by two points. The Oles and Royals both swept their MIAC series last weekend to move into a tie for third place, and, thanks to SMU's tie vs. St. Catherine, lead the Cardinals by three points. Augsburg currently holds down the fifth and final playoff spot with 14 points, one in front of SMU.

"I'm a little disappointed," admitted SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team had won its last five games — including two in overtime — to climb into the MIAC playoff hunt. "I think Friday's game hurt us a bit. We were so dominant (in their 5-2 win, in which SMU held a 44-24 advantage in shots on goal), and we came out and scored less than a minute into (Saturday's) game — I think we just got overconfident."

Madden picked up her second goal of the game midway through the second period, and it appeared like the Cardinals were well on their way to conference win No. 6.

Then came the third period.

Two minutes of the third period, to be exact.

Angie Johnson got the Wildcats on the board at the 2:47 mark of the final period, and Resche Hierlmaier got the equalizer at 4:07 as St. Catherine made the most of its nine third-period shots.

"Once we scored that early goal, we seemed to relax — we weren't hungry and we didn't play with much enthusiasm," said Mannor. "And when you play like that, you risk the chance that it could come back and bite you.

"And it did."
