Cardinals' perfect streak against Hamline comes to a screeching halt with setback, split in MIAC series
They exited with only one. The important one. The Cardinals, fueled by a pair of goals from both Laura Mueller (St. Paul, Minn.) and Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.), snapped a two-game losing streak with a 5-2 win over the Pipers at the SMU Ice Arena. SMU also had its shutout streak against the Pipers ended at 286:07 a span of more than four games on a first-period goal by Brianna Miller. But the key streak still stood, as the Cardinals' 5-2 Friday win pushed their winning streak against the Pipers to a perfect 12-0-0 all-time. Twenty-four hours later, however, even that streak came to a screeching halt, as Hamline scored four unanswered goals to erase an early SMU lead and fuel the Pipers to a 6-3 victory. "You wouldn't know it by the final score, but I felt we outplayed them for the most part," said SMU coach Terry Mannor, whose team outshot the Pipers 39-31 in Saturday's loss. "Their goalie played an outstanding game. She was the difference." Amy Madden (East Grand Rapids, Mich.) got the Cardinals off on the right foot in Saturday's rematch, scoring four minutes into the opening period, but Hamline responded with four unanswered goals including a pair of powerplay tallies to take a commanding 4-1 advantage. Madeline Loftus (Parsippany, N.J.) and Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) got the Cardinals within one, 4-3, with back-to-back gaols in the first 1:06 of the third period, but that was as close as SMU would get, as Hamline scored twice in a four-minute span midway through the period to ice the win the Pipers' first-ever vs. the Cardinals. "It's disappointing, but I could not be prouder of the way this team played," said Mannor. "They battled from start to finish and never gave up. It's a hard one to lose, but I certainly can't fault their effort." |
