Game Notes
Last Action: The Cardinals opened post-season play with an impressive 3-1 win over Augsburg in Minneapolis, Minn., on Tuesday. Jenn Shire (Anaheim, Hill.s, Calif.) scored twice as SMU netted three unanswered goals en route to the victory.
The Gusties had their 33-game MIAC winning streak snapped with a 2-1 loss at St. Thomas in their regular-season finale last Saturday. The Gusties had clinched the MIAC regular season title with a 6-3 win over the Tommies on Friday night.

Regular-Season Meetings: The Cardinals struggled to an 0-2-0 record against the Gusties this season, losing 4-0 on Jan. 21 on their home ice, then falling 6-0 two days later in St. Peter, Minn.
* Jan. 21, 2005: The Gusties pelted the Cardinals with 59 shots on goal en route to their a 4-0 decision at the SMU Ice Arena. GAC jumped out to a 2-0 first-period lead on goals by Ingrid Neve and Molly Doyle. Neve would add her second of the game early in the second period, and Doyle would close out the scoring with her second of the game at the 6:31 mark of the third period. Cardinal goalie Nikki Jung stopped a season-high 55 shots in the losing effort. GAC goalies Kitty Hurley and Danielle Koopman, meanwhile, finished with four saves each.
Jan. 23, 2005: The Gusties managed another 51 shots on goal in the teams rematch, scoring once in the first period, three times in the second and twice in the third en route to a 6-0 win and a sweep of the Cardinals. Laura Stypulkowski gave Gustavus all the offense it would need with her goal midway through the first period. Margaret Dorer, Abby Randall and Andrea Peterson all netted second-period goals in a two-minute span Randall's and Peterson's coming 21 seconds apart to give the Gusties a commanding 4-0 advantage heading into the final 20 minutes. Ingrid Neve and Kelly Crandall completed the rout with third-period goals. Nikki Jung stopped 45 of the 51 shots she faced, giving her 100 saves in the two-game series, while the Cardinals managed just seven shots on the GAC net including just one in the second period, when SMU was outshot 19-1.

Saint Mary's: SMU locked up its fifth straight MIAC playoff berth with its 3-1 win over Concordia last Saturday.
The Cardinals then improved to 3-1 in postseason play vs. Augsburg with a 3-1 victory over the Auggies in Minneapolis, Minn., on Tuesday.
It was the third straight time SMU and Augsburg have met in post-season play.
The Cardinals are winless in their last seven meetings vs. GAC (0-6-1) and have lost their last five to the Gusties by a combined score of 18-1.
SMUs last win over Gustavus came in the championship game of the 2001-2002 MIAC playoffs, when the Cardinals Emily Kearns scored a rebound goal with 4:55 remaining in regulation to lift the Cardinals to a 2-1 victory. Gustavus then turned the tables on the Cardinals in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament, beating SMU 2-0.
Gustavus boasts a 12-5-1 all-time record vs. SMU.
Jenn Shire (Anaheim Hills, Calif.) recorded her first career two-goal game Tuesday, helping the Cardinals overcome a 1-0 first-period deficit with back-to-back goals 10 minutes apart in the second period.
Madeline Loftus (Parsippany, N.J.) also scored for the Cardinals vs. Augsburg.
Nikki Jung (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.) finished with 34 saves vs. the Auggies, including 18 in the third period.
Thanks to their three-goal performances vs. the Cobbers last Saturday and the Auggies on Tuesday, SMU improved to 11-0-1 in games in which they score two or more goals.
The Cardinals are now 3-1-2 in their last six games.
Melissa Mondo (Vadnais Heights, Minn.) enters Thursdays game vs. Gustavus as the teams offensive leader in both goals (9) and points (15).
Jenn Shire and Rachel Harrison (Racine, Wis.) share the team lead in assists with eight.

Nikki Jung enters tonights game with a 2.18 goals-against-average and a .931 save percentage.
Jungs .931 save percentage ranks her ninth in all of NCAA Division III.
Jung was named the Cardinals lone representative to the MIAC all-conference team, after posting a 2.42 goals-against-avearge and a .921 save percentage.
Mondo was an honorable-mention All-MIAC selection.
Tuesdays win over Augsburg was just the third time this season that SMU has won when not scoring first (3-10-0).
The Cardinals are 8-2-3 in games in which they score the first goal.

Gustavus: The Gustavus women's hockey team won its fourth MIAC regular season title with a record of 17-1-0. The Gusties have won three MIAC titles in the past five years.
Gustavus sophomore defender Andrea Peterson was named MIAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and Mike Carroll was named MIAC Coach of the Year.
Peterson led the MIAC in scoring with 20 goals and 21 assists for 41 points. She ranks second in scoring in Division III with 25 goals and 26 assists for 51 points.

Coach Mike Carroll's squad has four players who have compiled 40 points or more this season. That group includes Andrea Peterson (25g, 26a - 51 pts.), Laura Stypulkowski (16g, 28a - 44 pts.), Kelly Crandall (18g, 25a - 43 pts.), Molly Doyle (17g, 26a - 43 pts.).
This will be the Gusties sixth consecutive appearance in the MIAC Playoffs. They have compiled a record of 8-4-2 overall including a mark of 5-0-1 on their home ice. Gustavus won the MIAC Playoff Championship last season with a 3-2 win over St.
Thomas in St. Paul.
Gustavus has been ranked in the USCHO.com Division III top ten the entire season. Coach Mike Carroll's squad is currently ranked #6. They have been ranked as high as #2.
The Gusties, who are averaging 5.5 goals per game, have outscored their opponents 137-31 this season.
Gustavus has been quite stingy on the power play allowing only two power play goals in 109 opportunities this season.
All three of the Gusties losses this season have come against teams ranked in the USCHO.com top ten. They suffered a 4-3 overtime loss to #3 Middlebury, a 5-1 loss to #5 UW-Stevens Point, and a 2-1 loss to #8 St. Thomas.
The Gusties, who are currently 21-3-1, have posted four 20-win seasons in the past five years. Over the past five years, Gustavus has compiled an overall record of 103-29-14 for a winning percentage of .753. The Gusties have posted a record of 78-9-5 in the MIAC during
that same stretch for a winning percentage of .875.
