Sweep of UST gives SMU No. 4 seed, MIAC opener vs. Augsburg

WINONA, Minn. — They needed a least one win to get in — they got two.

And, thanks to a 3-2, 4-3 sweep of regular-season MIAC champion St. Thomas, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team earned the No. 4 seed in the five-team MIAC post-season tournament.

The Cardinals will open the tournament Thursday at the Bielenberg Sports Complex in Woodbury, Minn., taking on fifth-seeded Augsburg in a play-in game to see who faces the top-seeded Tommies in Friday's semifinals.

"When you get to this stage in the season, it really doesn't matter who you play," said SMU coach Duncan Ryhorchuk, whose team lost both of its games against the Auggies during the regular season — falling 4-0 and 6-1. "The bottom line is, you've got to beat them all if you are going to move on (to the NCAA Division III national tournament).

"Hopefully we can use the momentum we gained (with the sweep of St. Thomas) and carry it into the playoffs."

SMU entered the final weekend of the regular season needed at least one win against the Tommies to earn a spot in the MIAC playoffs. Thanks two a pair of goals from Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.), the Cardinals push aside any doubt, beating UST 3-2 Friday evening — handing the Tommies their first conference loss of the season.

Less than 24 hours later, the Cardinals handed St. Thomas its second conference loss, getting an OT goal from Kearns — her second of the game — en route to a 4-3 win.

Augsburg, meanwhile, did not allow a goal in sweeping St. Benedict 6-0 and 3-0 to slip into the No. 5 spot.

"It should be a good game," said Ryhorchuk. "
