WINONA, Minn. — Saint Mary's University's Monica Deringer (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) were named to the All-Minnesota Intercollegiate Atheltic Conference women's hockey team, it was announced Wednesday..
Kearns, a junior, forward, came to life when the conference season began, scoring all 24 of her goals and both of her assists during SMU's 18-game MIAC schedule. A two-time All-MIAC selection, Kearns' 24 goals were tops among MIAC players, while her 26 points also ranked her among the conference's top 10 scorers.
Deringer, a senior defenseman and the team's captain, finshed the season with four points (one goal, three assists), but more importantly, helped spearhead a defense that boasted a 2.01 goals-against-average.
The Cardinals (10-4-4 MIAC, 9-8-6 overall) finished fourth in the MIAC standings, earning their third straight post-season berth. The defending MIAC tournament champions, SMU opens post-season play Thursday night, taking on Augsburg at the Bielenberg Sports Complex in Woodbury, Minn.
Senior goalie Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) and junior forward Tasa Kostel (Rochester, Minn.) earned honorable-mention All-MIAC honors.
