Blugolds prove they have Cardinals' number with 2nd shutout win

WINONA, Minn. — What a difference a year makes.

Last season, the Saint Mary's University women's hockey team dominated its game against UW-Eau Claire, getting goals from Missy Westergren and Christy Hicks (Bloomington, Minn.) and an 18-save performance from Missie Meemken (St. Cloud, Minn.) en route to a 2-0 victory over the Blugolds.

This season, the Blugolds turned the tables — twice.

After posting a 2-0 victory over the Cardinals earlier this season, the Blugolds completed their two-game, nonconference sweep of the Cardinals, blanking SMU for a second time, 3-0, Saturday afternoon at the SMU Ice Arena.

"There was no intensity out there at all," said SMU coach Duncan Ryhorchuk, whose team had its four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) snapped with the loss. "We just did not play well at all."

And while Ryhorchuk wasn't about to make excuses for his team's play, he was able to point the finger at a few things — like the fact that it was a nonconference game scheduled in the heart of the Cardinals' conference schedule.

"We looked at last week as a week of training, of preparation for our final six conference games," said Ryhorchuk. "It's not that we were looking past Eau Claire, it's just that we are in the middle of a battle to get into the conference playoffs, and our focus this week was on trying to make sure we were ready for this last stretch."

If Saturday's performance is any indication, the Cardinals' offense still needs a bit of fine-tuning.

"I was a little disappointed in our offensive play, especially considering how well we've been playing lately," said Ryhorchuk, whose team had scored 14 goals in its last four games. "We didn't create a lot of good scoring opportunities (against the Blugolds), and we didn't capitalize on the ones we did create.

"Hopefully we learned a thing or two from that game," continued Ryhorchuk, whose team travels to St. Benedict this weekend for a conference series against the Blazers. "We need to make sure we are mentally focused and physically playing at the top of our game. This is a big stretch — we need to play solid hockey from here on out."

* THIS AND THAT: The loss to UW-Eau Claire last Saturday completed the Blugolds' sweep of the Cardinals this season (they won 2-0 earlier this year) and was the fourth loss to a Wisconsin state school this season — SMU also lost twice to UW-Stevens Point (3-1 and 7-0), while tying UW-River Falls (2-2). … The loss also snapped SMU's season-high four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1). … In six of SMU's eight losses this season, the Cardinals have failed to score a goal. … Nitara Frost (North Mankato, Minn.) took the loss in goal for SMU, marking the first time in her four-year career that she has lost (18-1-0). … Emily Kearns (Hopkins, Minn.) remains the Cardinals' scoring leader with 16 goals and 18 points. … Tasa Kostel's (Rochester, Minn.) five assists are a team high. … SMU has been outscored 22-8 in the first period.
