Stimmel named women's basketball, golf head coach

Named SMU's
basketball, golf
head coach
WINONA, Minn. — Shawn Stimmel got the news Tuesday, and he couldn't wait to get the ball rolling.

After accepting the head women's basketball and golf coaching positions at Saint Mary's University, Stimmel was eager for his Cardinals to begin the climb — back toward the top of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

"I'm very excited about joining the Saint Mary's family," said Stimmel, who had spent the past two seasons as the head women's basketball and golf coach at King College in Bristol, Tenn., and replaces Dan Messmann, who stepped down after six seasons as the Cardinals' head coach. "Saint Mary's and Winona are a great fit for me and my family.

"What made this position so appealing is that (Saint Mary's) is a place that has a rich tradition of winning basketball," continued Stimmel. "The (basketball) program enjoyed a lot of success under coach Messmann, and I'm looking forward to building upon that."

Which shouldn't be too difficult for Stimmel, who enjoyed two very successful seasons at the helm at King College. The Lady Tornado won 38 games — including just their second 20-win season in 11 years in 2005-06 — under Stimmel, while also earning their first-ever NAIA Top 25 national ranking (22nd) and boasting eight academic all-conference selections.

"I'm eager to get on the phone and start calling (SMU's) current players and our incoming recruits … to get the ball rolling," said Stimmel, who was a team captain and two-time academic all-conference pick during his four-year collegiate playing career at Coe College from 1995-98. "I can't wait to get started."

"We are very excited to have Shawn join our staff," said SMU athletic director Nikki Fennern. "Shawn brings a wealth of experience and coaching success that will help to advance both our basketball and golf programs."
