ROCKFORD, Ill. Now that's more like it.
One day after managing just 38 points in a disappointing 63-38 loss to UW-La Crosse, the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team found its shooting touch, as the Cardinals rode the red-hot shooting of Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) and Jessica Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.) to a 62-55 victory over Milwaukee School of Engineering in the consolation game of the Rockford Tip-Off Tournament Saturday.
The Cardinals who made just 15 field goals against the Eagles on Friday including just 5 of 29 in the first half turned things around against the Raiders, getting a game-high 21 points from Luehmann and a 14-point, 10 rebound double-double from Weisbrod in posting their first win of the season.
SMU shot 41 percent from the field (11 of 27) in the first half to take a 28-23 advantage into the locker room at the intermission.
And it was more of the same in the second half as Luehmann netted 14 of her 21 points hitting 3 of 4 field goals and adding a 6-for-7 effort from the free throw line to help SMU pull away for the win.
Danielle Dehning (Spring Grove, Minn.) missed her first collegiate double-double by one point, finishing with nine points and a game-high 13 rebounds, while Cortney Femling paced MSOE with 21 points and six rebounds.
