The Cardinals went 3-0 vs. Gustavus a year ago, winning 60-53 and 61-55 during the regular-season, then handed the Gusties a 77-67 victory in the opening round of the MIAC playoffs. … The Cardinals picked up their third straight victory on Monday, getting 16 points from Ashley Luehmann — 15 in the game’s final 25 minutes — in a 75-73 overtime win over Bethel. … The Gusties, meanwhile, have been off since Dec. 10, when Gustauvs got a season-high 26-point effort from Jess Vadnais in a 67-58 win over Carleton.

Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) netted a team-high 16 points in Monday’s win, marking the sixth time in eight games that the SMU senior has led the Cardinals in scoring. … Luehmann has also scored 10 or more points in seven of SMU’s eight games and leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 ppg. … Monday’s overtime game was the Cardinals’ first since a 77-76 OT loss to Concordia on Dec. 12, 2004 — and SMU’s first overtime win since a 77-73 win over Carleton on Feb. 21, 1998. (SMU went 3-0 in OT games during that 1997-98 season). … The Cardinals’ current three-game winning streak is a season high. … After failing to score more than 65 points in any of their first six games, SMU has scored 74 and 75 in its last two games — both wins.

Jess Vadnais’ 26 points vs. Carleton on Dec. 10 was the second time this season that the GAC sophomore netted 26 points. … Bri Monahan, who leads the team with a 19.4 ppg average, has led the team in scoring in five of Gustavus’ eight games — including a season-high 27 points vs. St. Scholastica. … Monahan also boasts two double-doubles (27 points, 11 rebounds vs. St. Scholastica and 21 points, 13 rebounds) in GAC’s first eight games. … The Gusties, who opened with three wins in their first four games, have gone 2-2 in their last four. … Vadnais is also averaging in double figures (16.5 ppg) for the Gusties. … Today’s game is the first road game for the Gusties since opening the season at Wartburg on Nov. 22 (a 78-70 win) and at the UW-Eau Claire Tournament on Nov. 25-26 (an 83-51 loss to Luther and a 73-60 win over St. Scholastica).
