The Cardinals, who opened their Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference schedule with a disappointing 64-47 loss to St, Catherine last Wednesday, didn't show any ill effects from that setback on Saturday, as SMU got double-figure scoring from four different players en route to a 65-57 victory over Augsburg.
"It was good to see us bounce back after the St. Catherine game," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose team moved to 1-1 in the MIAC and 2-2 overall with the win. "We did not play exceptionally well (against St. Catherine), and it was nice to see that we didn't play with any lingering effects of that game."
Calla Swenson (Blooming Prairie, Minn.) led the way for the Cardinals, netting a career-high 18 points — including a 4-for-6 performance from behind the 3-point line — while also adding four assists, four rebounds, two blocks and a pair of steals. Jessica Weisbrod (Rollingstone, Minn.) chipped in 12 points and six boards, while Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) and Sarah Murphy (Belle Plaine, Minn.) each tallied 10 points.
"Calla had a huge game for us — she hit some big shots when we needed them," said Messmann of his freshman forward. "We started out a littlle slow (trailing 9-2 early in the first half) and (Swenson) hit some big shots that really seemed to get us going."
The Cardinals, fueled by an 11-for-26 performance from the field, jumped out to a six-point, 27-22 halftime advantage, and pushed that lead to as many as 12 in the second half. SMU led by 10, 43-33 with 8:54 left in the second half, before Augsburg used a 17-7 run to tie the game at 50-50 with 3:28 left.
Unfazed by the Auggies' late run, SMU responded with an 11-1 run of its own to seal the win. Swenson led the Cardinals' second-half charge, scoring 13 of her 18 points in the game's final 20 minutes.
"This was a nice win for us," said Messmann. "I think that the conference is going to be so balanced, that every game is going to be a battle, just like this one was. It was nice to see us put together a solid effort, and, hopefully, we can just continue to build from it."
