Cardinals' 3-game winning streak comes to a screeching
halt with disappointing loss to conference power CSB

WINONA, Minn. - With four games in the past seven days, the first week of the new year has not been an easy ride for the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team.

Luckily for SMU, three of the four games took place in Winona, so travel time was not a factor, and all three games ended in the Cardinals' favor - including a 72-66 win over Division II Winona State, an 87-66 victory over Bethel, and a 60-53 triumph over Gustavus Adolphus.

But when the Cardinals traveled to St. Benedict last Saturday for the final game of their rigorous four-game week, the MIAC's No. 2-ranked Blazers were not too sympathetic, handing SMU a 65-54 loss.

"I think the fact that we have played so many games in such a short amount of time had something to do with how we played (vs. St. Benedict)," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose team led 49-45 with 10 minutes remaining in regulationand led by as many as seven in the second half, only to have the Blazers go on a 20-2 run late in the game to ice the win. "You look at our schedule over the last week - Winona State, Bethel, Gustavus and St. Ben's - that's four quality opponents. To come out of that 3-1 isn't too bad."

Not too bad, but not perfect, either.

"We could have easily won that game (vs. St. Benedict)," said Messmann. "We had our chances, we just let them get on a roll and didn't come up with the stops we needed.

"We didn't play with the emotion that we did (last) Wednesday against Gustavus. That game was so intense, and everyone was so into it, it just seemed like (Saturday's game) was a little flat."

Megan Moran (Burlington, Wis.) pumped in a team-high 15 points to lead the Cardinals vs. CSB, while SMU also got 12 points from Angie Arrington (Spring Grove, Minn.) and 10 from Jamie Rattunde (Rollingstone, Minn.).

"We've still got a lot of work ahead of us," said Messmann, whose team faces a pair of stiff MIAC tests this week - Wednesday at Hamline and Saturday at home against St. Thomas. "Hamline has really picked up its game and is playing pretty well right now, and St. Thomas is always a big rivalry game for us, so we've got to keep striving to improve.

"We played very well all week, but not once did I think we put together a complete, 40-minute game," Messmann added. "We've got to find a way to get a solid effort for 40 minutes."
