Cardinals need another balanced effort against St. Olaf
WINONA, Minn. Jamie Rattunde (Rollingstone, Minn.) may have raised a few eyebrows with her second straight stellar night but the junior didn't lead the Saint Mary's University women's basketball team to a 67-62 victory over Hamline by herself.
Not by a long shot.
Fresh off her first career triple-double in SMU's 78-57 win over Coe last Wednesday, Rattunde made it 2-for-2 Wednesday, tossing in 15 points, pulling dowon 12 rebounds and adding 10 steals against the Pipers.
As impressive as those numbers were, however, it was just a portion of the Cardinals' offensive arsenal.
Angie Arrington (Spring Grove, Minn.) scored a team-high 18 points and led four SMU players in double figures as the Cardinals opened their conference season in impressive fashion.
Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) and Megan Moran (Burlington, Wis.) joined Rattunde and Arrington in double figures with 14 and 12 points, respectively, as SMU won for the second straight time to even its overall record at 2-2.
The foursome accounted for 59 of SMU's 67 points, with the other eight coming from Beth Walch (Altura, Minn. / four points) and Libby Kiedrowski (Minneapolis, Minn. / four points).
Jamie had another strong night, but it was good to see some other people step up and help out on the offensive end, said SMU coach Dan Messmann. Angie and Megan had expecially good nights, and as a team, we just seem to keep getting better with every game we play.
The Cardinals, who shot 40 percent from the field in the first half but netted 8 of 11 free throws jumped out to what seemed like a commanding 34-21 halftime advantage. Hamline, however, wasn't about to wave the white flag, as the Pipers shot a blistering 59 percent from the field over the game's final 20 minutes, only to come up just short.
That was a good win for us, said Messmann, whose team is back in action today, playing host to St. Olaf. Hamlines a much-improved team theyre going to be a thorn in a number of teams sides this year so to come away with a road win against them is big. |
