After a slow start, the Tommies finished strong, winning seven of its last nine to finish fourth in the MIAC standings with a 14-8 record. With the No. 4 seed, the Tommies open tournament play vs. Saint Mary's, a team UST swept during the regular season (66-60 and 76-72).

TOMMIES UPDATE

| The St. Thomas women's basketball team secured its 17th consecutive winning season with Saturday's 19-point win at Bethel... The Tommies (14-11) have won seven of their last nine games and are 5-1 in February road games... UST is 13-5 when it scores 55 or more points and 1-6 otherwise... Fourth-year head coach Tricia Dornisch's team has no seniors and played this season without starting point guard Velnisha Williams (knee injury)... Dornisch's career record is 85-22... The Tommies finished fourth in the conference and secured the school's 17th consecutive postseason berth... UST is 4-6 vs. playoff teams -- losing all six to the tri-champions Carleton, Gustavus and St. Ben's and sweeping close games with Saint Mary's and Concordia... The Toms lost 69-67 to Carleton at home Jan. 15 but had the ball on the final possession with a chance to win or tie... Sophomore guard Kristi Huegel has made 22 consecutive free throws and 59 of her last 64 foul shots. She has 26 3-point baskets in 25 games and has scored 14 or more points 12 or more times... The Toms are 9-1 in MIAC play when freshman forward Molly Miller scores in double figures... Freshman center Erica Opdahl is averaging 9.4 ppg and 4.5 rpg over her last seven games... junior forward Emily Buehler is averaging 12 ppg, 7 rpg and 3 apg in her last six games and has converted 55% from the field in that stretch... Freshman guard Christine Williams joined the varsity in mid January and the Toms are 9-5 since her arrival. She had scored in double figures three times... Junior forward Anne Laraway has one double-double and has scored in double figures six times... four Tommies have played in MIAC championship teams in other sports -- Huegel is the starting centerfielder on the UST softball team which placed fifth in the nation in 2002; Buehler is a starter in volleyball; Williams was a starter in soccer on a tgeam that tied for fifth in the nation last year; and reserve guard Kerry Shea played on the Toms' MIAC champion golf team last fall. |
