Cardinals earn No. 5 seed in MIAC playoffs, travel to St. Thomas
WINONA, Minn. The Saint Mary's University women's basketball team did its part last Wednesday ending its regular season with a 62-52 win over St. Catherine.
Then, as soon as the final horn sounded, the Cardinals became St. Catherine's biggest fans. You see, the Wildcats still had one game remaining, and if St. Catherine could beat Augsburg in its season final, the Cardinals, Wildcats and Concordia would finish in a three-way tie for fifth place.
And with a 3-1 record against the Wildcats and Cobbers, the Cardinals held the tiebreaker and would earn the No. 5 seed, while Concordia would be No. 6 and St. Catherine would be the odd team out.
A St. Catherine loss, and SMU would be No. 6, since Concordia held the third-criteria head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cardinals.
Confused? No need to be, since St. Catherine did exactly what the Cardinals needed, beating Augsburg 71-55 giving SMU that No. 5 seed.
And a third shot at St. Thomas on Monday.
"One of our goals at the start of the season was to get back into the conference playoffs we've accomplished that goal," said SMU coach Dan Messmann, whose team has lost 37 straight against the Tommies including 66-60 and 76-72 decisions this season. "But we're not going to be satisfied just getting there. We're not about to be intimidated by having to play (St. Thomas). We played two very tight games with them already this season, and there's no reason not to expect the same thing this time around.
"We've proven over the course of the season that we can play with anyone in the conference. Now we just have to go out there and do it."
