Jessica Bids Farewell
It has been difficult to come to terms with the fact that my collegiate volleyball experience is coming to a close. Coach Lester – do you think it would be possible to change my status to “junior” so that I’d have one more year of eligibility? One of my biggest fears in life is the end, and I’m certainly not ready for this experience to end. I never imagined the great friends and memories I would gain as a result of my choosing to play volleyball at SMU. I wouldn’t trade the opportunity for anything, and I realize I’ve been pretty lucky to have been involved in such a wonderful program. I never imagined I would play volleyball with such a talented group of women who are equally as passionate about this sport as I am.

To the outstanding members of the SMU volleyball team: The one thing we all have in common is a love of this great sport. I am so grateful for the chance to get to know all of you personally and work as a team to play to the best of our abilities. Molli – I have never met such a dedicated athlete. Thanks for all of the great times together, including the shopping cart ride and the trip to Florida. Ashley – I’ve probably spent more time playing next to you on the court than anyone else. I absolutely love your sense of humor and your fearlessness of insects (you have saved my life many times). Kaylene – I don’t know what else to say but that “fate” brought us together. Thanks for all of the wonderful words of wisdom this season, and thanks to your Grandma Rose for making such good cookies. Wendlandt – I have thoroughly enjoyed being serenaded by you; you have a wonderful personality. Carolyn – I don’t care what anyone says, you’ll always be my twin. I give you credit for not being scared away on your overnight visit!! Theresa – You are a natural born team leader and an outstanding volleyball player. I am still waiting for our picnic, I will bring the crackers. Kelsi – I’ve had a great time playing volleyball with you. Keep working hard and smiling! To the Freshmen – I hope you all realize what you are capable of and do great things while you are here at SMU. Good luck, it has been great getting to know each of you.

To Coach Lester, Rick, Kristin, Corey, Jamie, and everyone else at SMU who gave me the opportunity to play collegiate volleyball. You have taught me a lot of important lessons about life and have encouraged me to be the best student-athlete I could be. You each display an amazing knowledge of and devotion towards the sport of volleyball that I truly respect. Thanks for everything you have done for me.

To everyone who traveled to Italy last May – thank you for sharing the time of my life with me. Anyone up for a return visit in a few years?

To my roommates, Ashley, Kaylene, and Emily – there is a special place in heaven for the three of you for putting up with me. I couldn’t imagine a greater combination of people to have shared the past four years with. I will never forget the slow-motion night, the “friends-look” which always inevitably resulted in a marathon of Friends episodes, and the games of Phase-10. Emily – a heartfelt thanks for being the best “superfan” ever.

Lastly, to my parents – you have given me every opportunity I have ever received and I can’t thank you enough for all you have done for me. I appreciate your support and your love – you are my role models in life. I love you both very much.

SMU Volleyball 2006. One could say it’s like the end of an era!!
