The Cardinals rallied from a 2-0 deficit to force a fifth and deciding game, then came from behind to tie Game 5 14-14, only to give up the game's final two points in losing 3-2 to the Gusties in the teams' regular-season meeting a year ago. … The Cardinals are coming off a 1-3 performance at the University of Dubuque Tournament last weekend. SMU opened with a 3-1 win over Clarke, but then dropped three straight 3-0 decision to St. Thomas, Loras and host Dubuque. … Gustavus, meanwhile, locked up the No. 2 spot in the upcoming MIAC post-season tournament with a 3-2 win over Saint Benedict on Saturday.

Heading into the University of Dubuque Invitational, the Cardinals had won four of their last six matches. … SMU's back-to-back-to-back 3-0 losses last weekend was the second time the Cardinals have lost three straight 3-0 decisions and the ninth, 10th and 11th times this season they have been swept 3-0. … Molli Dant (Forest City, Iowa) collected 58 kills over the weekend and boasts a team-high 362 kills this season. … Theresa Perrini (Fairway, Kan.) picked up 81 digs at the Dubuque Invitational and is now the team's single-season dig leader with 563. … Perrini is one of seven SMU players with at least 100 digs. … Pam Stanton (Mundelein, Ill.) had 10 service aces last weekend, pushing her team-leading total to 45. … Wednesday's season final vs. Gustavus is the final collegiate match for SMU seniors Dant, Kaylene Mrozinski (North St. Paul, Minn.), Jessica Voight (Caledonia, Minn.) and Ashley Karl (Auburndale, Wis.).

Gustavus’ 3-2 win over Saint Benedict last Saturday assured the Gusties of the No. 2 seed in the upcoming MIAC Tournament. … GAC’s second-place MIAC finish is the Gusties’ highest since the 1986 squad won the MIAC title. … The win vs. the Blazers was GAC’s second straight. … Gustavus’ two conference losses have come against MIAC playoff teams 3-1 vs. league-champion Concordia and 3-1 to St. Thomas. … The Gusties snapped a season-high four-match losing streak with a 3-1 win at Macalester last Wednesday. … Against Saint Benedict, GAC’s Emily Klein set a school record for digs in a match with 46. … Klein leads the team in digs with 579 and is one of three Gusties with at least 300 digs this season. … Gustavus is 6-2 in three-game matches, 9-4 in four-gamers and 2-2 in matches that go the maximum five games.
