WINONA, Minn. — A year ago, the Saint Mary's University volleyball team went into cross-town rival Winona State's gymnasium and stole a 3-1 nonconference victory over the Warriors.

Monday evening, the Warriors turned the tables on the Cardinals.

Fueled by the 13-kill effort of Kaylan Lati, Winona State appeared right at home on the Cardinals' home floor, rolling to 3-0 (30-27, 30-24, 30-19) victory.

"It was a weird match," said SMU coach Mike Lester. "We started out playing pretty well in the first two games, but about the middle of the second game, the momentum shifted and we were just never able to get it back.

"We reverted back to us being our own worst enemy," continued Lester, whose team hit .056 for the match, committing 27 attack errors, while managing just 33 kills. "Last weekend (in the Border Battle), if we weren't able to get a good swing, at least we were able to put the ball in play. Tonight, we weren't doing that."

The two teams exchanged points throughout most of the opening game, with WSU opening a 21-16 advantage, only to have the Cardinals score nine of the next 10 points to take a 25-22 advantage. The Warriors then closed out the game with an 8-2 run to ice the win.

The Cardinals made it look easy to open Game 2, jumping out to a commanding 18-9 lead. Before they knew what hit them, however, the Cardinals found themselves on the short end of a 20-18 score as WSU rattled off 11 straight points and the Cardinals never recovered.

"That (11-0) run really took the wind out of our sails," said Lester. "We were sailing along pretty good there, and once (Winona State) started to make that run, we didn't have an answer – and it just snowballed.

"I thought we played better than the final score indicated, but I also know that we can play a lot better," said Lester, whose team moved to 8-13 overall, and returns to action Wednesday, playing host to Augsburg in an MIAC match. "Hopefully we'll be able to come out and prove that on Wednesday."
