Cardinals earn Game Plan/AVCA Academic honor WINONA, Minn. With the 2005 season right around the corner, Saint Mary's University volleyball coach Mike Lester has been focusing on how this year's team minus six graduated seniors can improve on last year's 21-10 overall finish. Yet, before Lester officially burns SMU's stellar 2004 season into his memory bank, the Cardinals chalked up one final post-season honor on Friday, as they were among 43 NCAA Division III schools to garner Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic honors. The award, initiated following the 1992 season, honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point-average. SMU was one of three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams to earn the Game Plan/AVCA academic honor, joining Carleton and St. Benedict on the list. |
