WINONA, Minn. — With the 2005 season right around the corner, Saint Mary's University volleyball coach Mike Lester has been focusing on how this year's team — minus six graduated seniors — can improve on last year's 21-10 overall finish.
Yet, before Lester officially burns SMU's stellar 2004 season into his memory bank, the Cardinals chalked up one final post-season honor on Friday, as they were among 43 NCAA Division III schools to garner Game Plan/AVCA Team Academic honors.
The award, initiated following the 1992 season, honors college and high school teams that displayed excellence in the classroom by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative team grade-point-average.
SMU was one of three Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference teams to earn the Game Plan/AVCA academic honor, joining Carleton and St. Benedict on the list.
