Cardinals dig hole too deep to dig out of in 3-1 tournament loss to Lakeland

WINONA, Minn. — The Saint Mary's University volleyball team got 12 kills from Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) and a stellar showing from setter Melissa Cowan (Algonquin, Ill.), but it was not enough as the Cardinals dug themselves a 2-0 hole and could never quite dig themselves out in losing to Lakeland 3-1 (30-24, 30-28, 19-30, 30-27) in the final match of pool play at the SMU Sugar Loaf Classic Saturday.

Cowan did a little of everything in in the losing effort, collecting 31 assists, six service aces, 10 digs and five kills with a .444 attack percentage. Tracy Koertgen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) chipped in 10 kills and six service aces, while Kirstan Rouzer (Comstock, Ill.) tallied seven kills, 11 digs and 4 aces.
