Cardinals shake off slow start to post perfect 2-0 record at Trinity Tournament

SAN ANTONIO, Texas — It took the Saint Mary's University volleyball team a few games to shake off the jet lag from their flight from Winona to San Antonio, Texas, but once the Cardinals warmed up a bit, A&M Kingsville and New York University probably wished SMU had never gotten off the plane.

The Cardinals dropped the first two games of their opening-round match of the Trinity Tournament to A&M Kingsville, then won six straight games en route to victories over A&M (28-30, 26-30, 30-20, 30-18, 15-10) and New York University (30-25, 30-24, 30-22).

Rhonda Thibault (Faribault, Minn.) led the Cardinals' offensive barrage in the five-game victory over A&M Kingsville, collecting 25 kills and boasting a jaw-dropping .595 attack percentage. Kirstan Rouzer (Comstock, Wis.) chipped in 19 kills, 13 digs and five blocks, while Tracy Koertgen (Crystal Lake, Ill.) and Ashley Dingels (Gibbon, Minn.) tallied 15 and 14 kills, respectively.

Things went a lot smoother against New York University, as Dingels and Koertgen led the way with nine kills each, while Thibault and Leslie Nicholls (Hastings, Minn.) added eight kills each. Nicholls also added a team-high 14 digs and Melissa Cowan (Algonquin, Ill.) finished with 34 assists, giving her 112 assists in the two matches.
