Redig leads Cardinal women to 4th at Platteville

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. — Melissa Redig (Wells, Minn.) got the Saint Mary’s University women’s track team off to a flying start – literally — as the freshman posted the school’s lone first-place finish, winning the high jump with a leap of 5-1, and led the Cardinals to a fourth-place showing in the outdoor season-opening UW-Platteville Invitational last Saturday.

The Cardinals’ fourth-place effort in the six-team event also included a third-place showing from Theresa Miller (New Berlin, Wis.) in the 1,500 (5:19.80) and a fifth-place effort from Colleen O’Hearn (Champlin, Minn.) in the shot put (31-10). O’Hearn also recorded a throw of 80-8 1/2 in the hammer, good for 13th overall, while Emilee Conley (Fennimore, Wis.) and Amy Black (Crystal Lake, Ill.) were eighth and ninth in the 1,500 with times of 6:20.30 and 6:33.90, respectively.

On the men’s side, Kevin Schemenauer (Chippewa Falls, Wis.) led a quartet of SMU runners in the 1,500, as the sophomore clocked a time of 4:19.30 to finish third overall and lead the Cardinals to a seventh-place team finish. Keith Pieschek (Sturgeon Bay, Wis.) finished ninth in the 1,500 (4:40.30), while Rob Erickson (Crystal Lake, Ill.) was 14th (4:53.90) and Luke Hofmann (St. Louis, Mo.) was 15th (4:54.20).

Todd Yankowski (Chicago, Ill.) leaped 18-7 to finish sixth in the long jump, while Chris Beach (Maple Grove, Minn.) opened the season with a throw of 108-0 in the discus to place eighth and Bryan Amburn (Rapid City, S.D.) tallied a throw of 74-5 to place 10th in the hammer throw.
