Cardinals' cupboard far from bare as SMU looks to continue climb up MIAC ladder during '07 seasons
* 3 All-Americans. * 14 NCAA Division III national qualifiers. * 32 NCAA Division III provisional qualifiers. * 60 school records. With a three-year run like that, what can Nauman do for an encore? Add on to those gaudy numbers in all four categories. "What's the next step? Keep improving, keeping moving the program forward," said Nauman, whose team kicks off the indoor season on Jan. 13, taking part in the Northwest Open on the University of Minnesota campus. "We've shown a lot of growth in my first three years here, not only in roster size, but also in the quality of the athletes that we have competing for us. "We've made some great strides, but we've still got a ways to go to get where we ultimately want to be." To get there, however, the Cardinals are going to have to do it without an All-American and a pair of national qualifiers. "We lost a lot (to graduation), especially on the women's side," said Nauman, who graduated five seniors including Megan Mason, an All-American in the high jump, and Autumn Valk, a national qualifier in the hurdles. "We lost some outstanding athletes, and you can't just go out and replace them. "Their presence is going to be greatly missed." Despite the loss of five key components to the Cardinal women's fourth-place run at the MIAC Championships, it's not like Nauman's cupboard is bare. Not by a long shot. Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.), an All-American shot putter at the outdoor national championships, and Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.), a national qualifier in both the shot put and javelin at the outdoor national championships not to mention the MIAC's Outstanding Field Athlete are back for another go-around. "I'm excited about the season, both on the men's and the women's side," said Nauman. "I think we have the ability to make some noise, not only at the conference level, but at the national level as well." |
