Shawn McMahon named Cardinals' new head coach
After all, in Nauman's four seasons, the SMU program produced four All-Americans, 17 NCAA championships participants, two NCAA automatic qualifiers, 37 provisional qualifiers and 18 honorees on the USTFCCCA All Academic Team. At the conference level, the Cardinal men's and women's track and field teams produced 13 MIAC champions, three MIAC record holders, 60 all-conference selections and two field athletes of the meet. Those are some pretty big shoes to fill. And Shawn McMahon can hardly wait to step into them. McMahon, a former assistant track and field coach at UW-Stout, was named Nauman's successor on Monday, according to SMU athletic director Nikki Fennern. "I am absolutely thrilled to be joining the Saint Mary's community," said McMahon. "I am excited about the challenge of becoming a head coach and feel extremely fortunate that I can do so in Winona with a university that I hold in very high regard." McMahon spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach for UW-Stout, where he worked primarily with the jumpers. He also boasts five years of high school coaching experience, helping guide West Salem High School to two conference team titles, three WIAA Regional team titles and helped guide more than 30 individuals to the WIAA State Meet. "I'm looking forward to building upon the success this program enjoyed under coach Nauman, who did a wonderful job in his time (at SMU)," McMahon said. "The program is clearly pointed in the right direction and it is now my duty to continue with that success and build valuable experiences for our student-athletes." And Fennern is confident that McMahon will do just that. "We are pleased to add Shawn to our coaching staff," Fennern said. "Our track and field programs have made some great strides and I'm confident that, under Shawn's guidance, the future promises to be even brighter." |
