Nauman steps down to take post at St. Scholastica
Which was good for him, but not so good for Saint Mary's. Nauman announced Monday that he was stepping down as the Cardinals' head coach to accept the head track and field position at the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth, Minn. "I am really excited about the opportunities and challenges that St. Scholastica has to offer," said Nauman. "Personally, and professionally, this will be a good move that I am really looking forward to. My fiance, Jamie, and I have been apart long enough, and this position gives me a chance to be back with her full-time." "Kirk has done a wonderful job with our track and field program during his tenure at SMU," said SMU athletic director Nikki Fennern, adding that a national search for Nauman's successor will begin immediately. "He has built a good base for the future of the program." Under Nauman, the SMU program has produced four All-Americans, 17 NCAA championships participants, two NCAA automatic qualifiers, 37 provisional qualifiers and 18 honorees on the USTFCCCA All Academic Team. At the conference level, the Cardinal men's and women' track and field teams have produced 13 MIAC champions, three MIAC record holders, 60 all-conference selections and two field athletes of the meet. In 2005, Nauman was also named MIAC Women's Indoor Coach of the Year. "The toughest part of moving on is what I'm leaving behind," said Nauman, who has watched his teams break school records in 72 events during his tenure, while both the men's and women's teams have been recognized nationally by the USTFCCCA for annually having a high ranking team GPA. "It has been a quick four years here at Saint Mary's and I have truly enjoyed my stay here. In some ways, I feel like I am graduating with the first group I coached here. "We have been able to accomplish so many things in a short amount of time," Nauman added. "I have to thank (assistants) Ward Berndt, Jackie Luehmann and Jamie Herrick without them, this track and field program would not be what it is today." |
