Cardinals' Weinmann, Luehmann dominate MIAC shot put (again) as duo finshes 1-2 to pace SMU
Only this time around, it was Weinmann who outdueled her senior counterpart to earn the conference's No. 1 spot. During the MIAC indoors in March, Luehmann was crowned queen of the shot, posting a meet-best throw of 13.29 to edge Weinmann, who posted a 13.28-meter throw. Last Friday, Weinmann uncorked a toss of 13.50 meters to dethrone Luehmann, who settled for second with her throw of 12.50 meters. Luehmann earned her second all-conference honor in as many events Friday with a second second-place effort, this one in the javelin, where the Cardinal senior demolished the SMU school record with a throw of 43.78 meters. The mark was not only a school record, but for a brief time it was also an MIAC meet record only to have Gustavus' Lisa Brown post a throw of 44.42 in her final attempt to win the event. And the SMU senior picked up right where she left off on Saturday, placing third in the discus, breaking the school mark with a throw of 42.38 meters. "It was a good-news, bad-news kind of meet," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman, whose women placed 10th out of 12 teams, while the men were 10th out of 11. "We had some really good performances from both Ashley and Amanda, and then we had some that weren't quite so good. Luehmann posted her third NCAA provisional-qualifying mark with her throw in the discus, placing third with her 42.38-meter toss. Weinmann chipped in a third in the hammer (44.13 meters), while the women's 4x100 was fifth (50.91). Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) chipped a seventh-place effort in the discus, breaking his own school record with a throw of 42.76, while Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.) was eighth in the long jump with a leap of 6.40 meters, and added a sixth in the triple jump, posting a school-record leap of 13.18 meters to place sixth. The men's 4x400 also broke the school record, placing eighth in 3:25.10, while the 4x100 was seventh in 43.25 "Obviously, we would have loved to finish a bit high (in the team standings), but we broke five school records, so it's pretty tough to feel too disappointed," said Nauman. "It was a good year for us, and I'm proud of what we've accomplished and how far this program has come." |
