Luehmann, Cardinals are good at UM-Duluth, but they are even better at UW-La Crosse Invitational
Friday evening, however, the Saint Mary's University senior was even better and so were her teammates. Luehmann improved her NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the javelin, winning the event with a toss of 42.11 meters, while teammate Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) also posted an NCAA provisional mark in the shot put, and three SMU men broke school records to highlight the Cardinals' effort at the UW-La Crosse Phil Esten Challenge. "We had a really good meet," understated SMU coach Kirk Nauman, who watched as Luehmann moved up to No. 7 in all of NCAA Division III with her throw in the javelin. "We had an opportunity to compete with some of the top teams in NCAA Division III, and I think we handled the challenge well." Weinmann joined Luehmann as event winners, as the senior won the shot put with a throw of 13.35 meters, a provisional-qualifying mark, but not as far as her season-best of 13.72 meters, set at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational last weekend. Luehmann also posted a fourth-place effort in the discus (38.98 meters) and a sixth in the shot (12.52 meters), while Katie Schultz (Alden, Minn.) was sixth in the high jump, clearing the bar at 1.50 meters. On the men's side, throwers stole the show, as Derek Wherley (Missoula, Mont.) broke the school's 10-year-old shot put record with a toss of 13.39 meters, while Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) broke his own record in the discus, uncorking a throw of 41.15 meters. The Cardinal 4x400 relay team of Joe Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.), Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.), John Vallez (Eagan, Minn.) and Dan Gerber (Belvidere, Ill.) also got into the record-setting act, posting a time of 3:26.07 eclipsing the old mark, set nine years ago, by .64 tenths of a second. The trio also placed third in the 4x100, stopping the clock in 43.50. Curtis Van Asten (Shiocton, Wis.) and Vallez each added fifth-place efforts, Van Asten's in the 110 hurdles (16.58) and Vallez's in the 800 (2:00.18), while Joe Holman (Suamico, Wis. / 110 hurdles, 16.80) and Marty Howard (Chicago, Ill. / 800, 2:01.01) added seventh-place finishes. "This meet had such a strong field very comparable to our conference meet so I feel good about our performances," said Nauman. "A number of our performances will move into the top 10 on the conference honor roll, which is great to see. "With just two weeks of competition before the conference championships, I feel good about where we are at." |
