WINONA, Minn. — In early March, they competed in their final NCAA Indoor National Championships.

Last Saturday, Saint Mary's University seniors Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) and Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) took a giant step toward earning berths in their final NCAA Outdoor National Championships.

Luehmann provisionally qualified for the outdoor national championships in both the shot put and javelin, while Weinmann — an indoor All-American thanks to her eighth-place finish in the shot put in March — provisionally qualified in the shot put to lead the Cardinals' charge at the UW-Eau Claire Invitational.

"We had some really nice performances," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "I was happy with the three NCAA qualfiers and the two school records we broke. This was very big meet (15 teams), so it was good to see how we would react against so much competition."

Luehmann picked up her first-place finish of the outdoor season, winning the javelin with a toss of 40.02 meters, while also placing third in the shot put (13.40 meters). Weinmann, meanwhile, chipped in a second-place showing in the shot put — breaking the school record with a throw of 13.72 meters — and Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) added a fourth-place time of 59.06 in the 400.

While Luehmann and Weinmann were making the most of their final track and field seasons, Kevin Hein (Zumbro Falls, Minn.) is making the most of his first, as the SMU freshman broke the school's 12-year-old discus record, uncorking a toss of 40.23 meters, breaking the old mark, held by Eric Tomaszewski by four feet. The Cardinal men's relay teams also had a solid day Saturday, as the 4x400 relay placed third (3:28.28), while the 4x100 relay finished fourth (43.41).

"It was nice to get out there and not have to deal with snow or cold," said Nauman. "We have a busy week ahead (Tuesday at UM-Duluth and Friday at UW-La Crosse), so our outdoor season is definitely in full swing."
