Invitational
WINONA, Minn. — With two meets remaining before the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Indoor Championships, Kirk Nauman figured it was time for his Saint Mary's University track and field teams to really start hitting their stride.

How right he was.

Not only did the Cardinals break a pair of school records, but they also picked up six first-place finishes at the UW-Stout Invitational last Friday.

"This was a good meet for us, a little lower key in terms of number of teams competing, but that's what we needed right about now," said Nauman. "We got a number of very good performances and broke two more school records — which is always nice to see.

"It's the time of year when you start gearing up for the conference championships, and a performance like this is a great confidence-booster for us."

Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn.) and Derek Wherley (Missoula, Mont.) took center stage for the SMU men, as Ryks broke the school record in the 400, placing fourth in a time of 52.11. In fact, Joe Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) also broke the school's 400 mark, stopping the clock in 52.20 to place seventh overall. Wherley, meanwhile, broke his own mark in the shot put, posting a throw of 13.02 to finish sixth. The Cardinal men also got a first-place showing from the 4x400 relay team, which stopped the clock in 3:35.01.

Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) had a busy day for the Cardinal women, placing first in the 55 (7.73) and the 200 (27.80) and third in the long jump (4.62 meters). Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) was also a double-winner, leading a 1-2 finish in the shot put with a throw of 13.15 meters, then capturing the weight throw with a toss of 15.21 meters. Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) chipped in first in the 3,000 (11:17.98), while Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn. / shot put, 13.04 meters), Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis. / mile, 5:29.07) and Val Koch (Janesville, Wis. / 200, 28.40) also tallied second-place performances.

"We've been progressing very nicely thus far," said Nauman, whose teams will take part in the Pre-MIAC hosted by Carleton next weekend, before heading to Northfield, Minn., for the MIAC Indoor Championships on March 2-3. "Hopefully that will continue next weekend and into the conference meet."
