School-record
in shot put at
Eastbay Invite
WINONA, Minn. — The times keep dropping, the distances keep growing — and the records keep falling.

The Saint Mary's University track and field teams broke a pair of school records, and tied another, at the UW-Stevens Point/Eastbay Invitational last Saturday — and coach Kirk Nauman couldn't be happier.

"This was a great meet for us — we had so many people turning in top-eight performances, and for us to break two more school records, that's outstanding," said Nauman, who watched as Derek Wherley (Missoula, Mont.) improved his school mark in the shot put with a throw of 12.83 meters, while the men's distance medley relay team shattered the school's five-year-old mark with a time of 10:57.13 to place third. "Our men's program continues to show progress — for us to break two school records and tie another (Nick Lorenz (Fountain City, Wis.) in the 55, 6.68) — that great to see.

And the best part," Nauman added, "is that our men's program is so young. Hopefully these first few weeks of the season are a sign of great things in our future."

Lorenz placed second with his school record-tying 6.68 time in the 55, while the SMU freshman was also part of the second-place finishing 4x200 relay. John Baures (Fountain City, Wis.) added a seventh in the high jump (1.78 meters), while Joe Holman (Suamico, Wis.) was sixth in the heptathlon and Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.) was eighth in the 200.

On the women's side, Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) was the Cardinals' most impressive performer, winning the shot put with a personal-best toss of 13.05 meters — more than eight inches father than her previous-best, and a vast improvement on her NCAA Division III provisional-qualifying mark. Amanda Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) completed SMU's one-two finish in the shot, settling for second behind Luehmann with a throw of 12.71 meters.

Weinmann did pick up the SMU women's other first-place finish, winning the weight throw (15.07 meter), while Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn. / 400, 1:00.26), Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn. / 5,000, 19:36.82) and Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis. / long jump, 5.01 meters) all chipped in third-place efforts. Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis.) tallied a fourth in the 3,000 (11:13.41), with Bartusek adding a sixth in the 200 (27.51) and Kim Koecheler (St. Paul, Minn.) posting an eighth in the 800 (2:30.18).,

"Both the men's and women's teams had a great weekend and I'm happy for all the solid performances," said Nauman. "It's meets like this — with so many PRs and school records — that are helping put us in the right position for the conference championships."
