Weinmann finally gets a little NCAA company, as Luehmann provisionally qualifies in the shot put
Finally. Heading into last Saturday's UW-Superior, Weinmann was the Saint Mary's University's sole NCAA Division III national championships provisional qualifer. She's alone no more. Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) joined her fellow SMU senior in the provisional-qualifying spotlight Saturday, posting a toss of 12.87 in the shot put. "For some reason, we've always had a lot of success at this meet and this year was no different," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman, who not only got to watch Luehmann join the ranks of the provisional qualifiers, but also saw five school records and two facility marks fall by the wayside. "We've really started out the season strong. This is the third straight meet in which we've had some outstanding performances. "It's still early, and a lot of our athletes are just getting their legs under them, but I'm very pleased with the way we've come out of the gate." And for the third straight meet, Weinmann has led the Cardinals' charge. Weinmann picked up one of the SMU women's two first-place finishes, breaking the school mark in the weight throw with a toss of 15.97 meters. The Cardinal senior also shattered the school mark in the shot put, placing third with a throw of 13.46 meters. Teri Heinzen (Marshfield, Wis.) had a busy afternoon, as the SMU freshman placed second in the 200 (28.00), third in the 60 (8.33) and seventh in the long jump (4.85 meters), while Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) making her first appearance of the indoor season added a second in the 400 (1:00.20) and Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) was third in the 5,000. Kim Koecheler (St. Paul, Minn.) chipped in a seventh in the 1,000 (3:21.02), while Alicia Hartung (Menomonie, Wis.) was eighth (3:25.25). On the men's side, Joe Weinmann (Rochester, Minn.) led the Cardinals' charge, setting a new school record in the 500 (1:09.06), while Derek Wherley (Missoula, Mont.) broke the SMU mark in the shot put, uncorking a toss of 12.59 meters. Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.) posted a second in the triple jump (12.83 meters), a fifth in the long jump (6.14 meters) and a seventh in the 200 (23.75), while John Vallez (Eagan, Minn.) added a fifth in the 3,000 (9:26.19) and John Baures (Fountain City, Wis.) was fifth in the high jump (1.73 meters). "This was a tough field there were a lot of Division I and II schools here, which made it a bit intimidating," said Nauman. "But I was very happy with the way we performed. "To break five school records, two facility marks and have three provisional-qualifying performances, that's a pretty good day's work." |
