Weinmann remains in spotlight with school-record performance in weight throw at Eau Claire Invite
And the Cardinal senior isn't about to give up the spotlight anytime soon. Just a week after provisionally qualifying for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships in both the shot put and the weight throw, Weinmann was at it again last Friday, breaking the school record in the shot put while also improving her provisional marks in both the shot and weight throw to highlight SMU's performance at the Blugold Open. "We had a respectable early season performance," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman. "I was very happy to see Amanda break her own school record in the weight throw it is great to see the progression she has made since her freshman year." Weinmann broke her year-old school mark in the weight throw, posting a toss of 15.64 meters to place second overall. The SMU senior also placed second in the shot put with a throw of 13.01 meters. Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) chipped in a fourth-place effort in the shot put (11.99 meters) and Tera Bollig (Cambridge, Minn.) added a seventh in the mile (5:32.02). On the men's side, Chris Fisette (Elmhurst, Ill.) was fourth in the long jump (6.37 meters) and Nick Lorenz (Fountain City, Wis.) was fourth in the 55 (6.76), while Jon Vallez (Eagan, Minn.) pitched in a fifth in the 800 (2.03.38). Other top-eight finishers for the Cardinals included: Joe Weinmann (Rochester, Minn. / 6th, 400, 53.17), Derek Wherley (Missoula, Mont. / 6th, shot put, 11.60; 7th, weight throw, 12.06), Josiah Ryks (Austin, Minn. / 7th, 400, 53.44), Eric Sonnek (Delevan, Minn. / 7th, shot put, 11.29), Nick Anderson (Austin, Minn. / 8th, 400, 56.92), Marty Howard (Chicago, Ill. / 8th, 800, 2:07.77) and Curt Van Asten (Shiocton, Wis. / 8th, 55 hurdles, 8.66).
