Weinmann, Luehmann, Mason rewarded for their patience with berths in national championships
Weinmann and Mason both provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III Indoor National Championships on Feb. 17, then patiently waited nearly a month to see if Weinmann's throw of 12.94 meters in the shot put and Mason's jump of 1.67 in the high jump would be good enough to earn her a spot on the nation's biggest stage. It was, as Weinmann and Mason both made the trip to Northfield, Minn., for the indoor national championships.. During the outdoor season, Weinmann and Mason once again found themselves waiting. Weinmann heaved a provisional-qualifying mark in the shot put at the UNI Invitational on April 8 and then improved it to a school-record 13.48 meters over the remainder of the regular season. Mason, meanwhile, cleared 1.67 meters at the Manitou Classic in Northfield, Minn., on April 22 and then, like Weinmann, waited. And waited. And waited. Sunday evening, the SMU duo were rewarded for \their patience, as her mark in the shot held up, earning Weinmann yet another trip to the national championships. And, once again, they won't be alone. Senior Ashley Luehmann (Lewiston, Minn.) thanks to a school record-setting toss of 42.99 meters in the javelin at the UW-L Last Chance Meet last Thursday and a 13.23 showing in the shot put at the UW-Oshkosh Last Chance Meet last Tuesday will also be making trek to the national championships. "To get three people in is great," said SMU coach Kirk Nauman, noting that his three other provisional qualifiers Maria Roche (New Prague, Minn.), Emily Bartusek (Albert Lea, Minn.) and Autumn Valk (Appleton, Wis.) all missed making the national-championship field by hundreths of a second. "It would have been nice to get a few more people in, but these three are very deserving and will do a great job." |
